Very excited to be presenting a version of my "Witch Pictures" talk for Atlas Obscura on Thursday, March 31st at the Gemini Scorpio Lounge. "Our Lady" Lecture Soiree is an evening of talks and performance that celebrate female iconography, hosted by Obscura Society NY. In addition to my witchery, Sonia Simoes will be teaching us about erotica, and Polina Porras will discuss the Virgin of Guadalupe. There will also be music, drinks, and snacks! Further details below, and tickets here:
Obscura Society NY: "Our Lady" Lecture Soiree
Exploring female iconography through lecture, libations, and musical performance
Spend an evening in adoration and exploration of the power of the female image with musical performance, cocktails, and three lectures which consider depictions of women across time and cultures. Female artists and researchers reflect on their own explorations into the power of female icons. We'll explore the transforming imagery of women from religious iconography to erotica, pornography, and style, and finally examine the image of the witch in visual culture. The magic deepens with the music of mysterious female sirens of sound. Let your mind be ignited and your soul moved as we celebrate the feminine with live music, cocktails, food, and deep investigation.
Curator, writer, magic practitioner, and brilliant creator of Phantasmaphile, Pam Grossman will guide us through the magical and transgressive power of witch imagery in Western art, exploring the shifting visions of these oft-demonized or idealized women as archetypes, muses, and themselves visionary artists.
Sonia Simoes, writer, erotica expert, and collaborative partner in the photography project Call Me Balthazar will explore the history and politics of erotica in relationship to their work and human subjects.
Artist Polina Porras will talk about her project "Santa Agua", through the symbology of its main character: the Virgin of Guadalupe, whom she embodied in front of two churches in Mexico. She will explore the "birth" of this powerful Mexican icon as she dethroned the Pre-Hispanic goddess Tonantzin, incorporating ancient myth, fertility, apparitions, virgins, nature, miracles, corn bellies and clay legs.
Musical performers t.b.a. (Stay tuned... something very powerful is in the works!)
