Madeline von Foerster "Redwood Cabinet"
I just got word that the lovely Madeline von Foerster has a print show opening tonight in Brooklyn at Skink Ink. This is a great opportunity for to purchase her masterful work via a more wallet-friendly situation:
The Gallery at Skink Ink Editions announces an exhibition of prints by
Madeline Von Foerster
Exhibition dates: Sept 22nd. to Oct 23rd. 2011
Gallery hours: 11am to 6pm
Thursday through Sunday
Opening: Thursday, Sept. 22nd. 7pm to 9pm
In this series Madeline Von Foerster uses the sensuousness and luminosity of 15th century Flemish painting techniques to allure the viewer into an encounter with our problematic relationship to nature. These masterful works originally rendered in tempera paints and glazes will be reproduced as high quality giclée prints on cotton rag paper.
The subject of each work is the environment, more specifically, how we fetishize nature and how we often use it for our own selfish purposes. By placing endangered species within Curiosity Cabinets of the Enlightenment, Von Foerster, evokes an awareness to the truth of our own self-sabotaging, which we often confuse with human progression and technological advancement. Madeline’s tender and laborious renderings of these animals in this series communicates to our own deep-seated compassion for the lives of others without and even the self within.
Skink Ink is publishing an edition entitled 'Cabinet' which will comprise of a collection of six images, each 20” x 28”, which will be sold individually, each in an edition of 50. Ten copies of the complete Cabinet collection will be presented in a handmade portfolio case with printed interleaves offering additional information about each work. In addition there will be two further prints outside of the collection; a larger version of 'Mahogany' 24” x 36” in a an edition of 50 and a smaller print 'Invasive Species' (13” x 17”) in an edition of 100. All works are signed and numbered.

Hurrah!
I've always been fascinated by the art of Madeline von Foerster, her skill to imitate old painting techniques, and the many references to the alchemy and symbolism. I also made a tribute to her art in a video i uploaded in my YT channel, setting the dark and mysterious music by the Third Ear Band:
