Shauna Finn "Draw Down the Moon" 2015
I came across Shauna Finn's work thanks to this Times article about the New York Academy of Art's one night "Once Upon a Time" exhibition for their annual Tribeca Ball. At first glimpse I thought this ethereal image was a photograph, and then fell in love with it further when I realized it was painted entirely. Finn's pictures of women shrouded in gauze evoke a great deal in me. They make me think of brides, naturally, but wed to whom? With their often obscured faces, I get the sense that they are priestesses or nuns of a sort, married to mystery. Title of this piece aside, these females feel lunar and liminal - literal and figurative representations of those who seek what's beyond the veil.
Thank you so much for your shout-out!!! I love your interpretation so much, really kind and eloquent words to compliment my painting, thank you!!
