I've gushed about Florine Stettheimer before, but just stumbled across this glorious, vermilion self-portrait and had to share. Also, this poem of hers, which she wrote to explain her creative process:
For a long time
I gave myself
To the arrested moment
To the unfulfilled moment
To the moment of quiet expectation
I painted the trance moment
The promise moment
The moment in the balance
In mellow golden tones . . .
Then I saw
Forcing me in joy to paint them . . .
May we all live so vividly.
Edit: Just noticed a new monograph of her work is coming out this May from Yale University Press. Looks delish.
Edit 2: Holy horses, there will be a major retrospective of her work opening at the Jewish Museum in May as well! How fantastic!!
