Barbara Ensor "She was not like the others" 2011
I keep passing these mysterious signs in my neighborhood advertising a show called "Primoridal Hybrids" by Barbara Ensor. I've been meaning to stop by for ages. It's at the Old Stone House, a place I live just a few blocks from, but which I've never been inside (isn't that always the way?) The gallery hours are a bit dodgy so I haven't yet had the opportunity to see the show in person. But upon googling, I must say I have fallen completely in love with Ensor's work, and with this series in particular. She creates silhouettes of human-headed beasts, and embellishes them with old book papers, elaborate frames, and zen-koan like snippets of narrative in her curlicued handwriting. They feel literary and whimsical at once, and I can't wait to get the chance to meet them face to face (to hoof). Thank goodness the show is up through June 22nd, so there's still time.
