I realize at this moment in time, most people are preoccupied with the cinematic behemoth that is The Dark Knight. And rightly so, as it is an astoundingly great film. But please do yourself a favor, and make sure you don't miss the visual masterpiece that is Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Made by Guillermo del Toro (the genius behind Pan's Labyrinth), this movie is an utterly gorgeous, thoroughly enjoyable unlikely hero story, chock full of some of the most imaginative, fantastical creatures and environments I have ever seen on screen. You don't have to have seen the first Hellboy to understand what's going on (though that's a pretty good film in itself), and you will be treated to an exciting and at times quite funny ocular feast. Go now.
I too really enjoyed Helloby, and wish people wern't so down on it - I can hardly wait to see the new one. del Toro is a genius.

Hellboy II was fantastic. I am really impressed that Mike Mignola as the creator of the comic series and producer of the film for allowing Del Toro to flesh out his character in film form and to run wild visually. Ron Perlman makes a perfect Hellboy...and if you've never read the original comic series they have all been released in trade form and are worth having a read. Mignola collects folktales, and myths from around the world and weaves them into his narratives making them very dark, very tongue in cheek way, and of course violent and twisted.

I have been very impressed with both film versions of Hellboy. While each have del Toro's unique stamp on them they still retain the spirit of Mignola's work. The second film is truly a visual feast. I cannot wait for the DVD release so I can pause all through the Troll Market scenes and just drink it all in.
