Tim Biskup "As Above, So Below" 2007
It's great to see Tim Biskup's work getting richer and more sophisticated over time. Don't get me wrong, I love his kooky characters and retro patterning, but his two big US shows of the past two years seem to have taken a more adult turn. In his 2007 show "Ether" at Billy Shire, scantily clad women interface with mythological beasts, becoming a cryptic commentary on sex and magic. His current show up at Jonathan LeVine is called "The Artist in You," and is Biskup's exploration of what is means to be an artist, and where the fine art world is failing and needs to evolve. You can also read his manifesto of the same name, available for download here, near the bottom of the page. It's cool that an artist of his stature is engaging in this very down and dirty, vulnerable, incendiary conversation.
