Cristina Vergano "My, My, Why Fear?" 2006
You already know about my predilection for secret things. Couple that with some beautiful craftsmanship, and I am head over heels in love. Here are some examples of undercover artwork I have been tickled by of late:
Cristina Vergano's "Figure of Speech" series (see above) consists of paintings that spell out their own titles via pictogram riddles.
Architectural designer Eric Clough created an apartment that is one giant, exquisite puzzle for the owners to solve: "...some of that furniture and some of those walls conceal secrets — messages, games and treasures — that make up a Rube Goldberg maze of systems and contraptions..." Check out the incredible slideshow.
Lori Hayes takes old books and nestles her paintings within the pages. She then plants them on the shelves and tables of libraries and book stalls, so they might be found by an unsuspecting peruser. Those who come across one of these literary surprises are encouraged to email the artist, so she knows that her pieces have found a home.
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
