Claude Verlinde "Aphrodite"
I'm sure you know of my intense love for mythology by now. So when I encountered Claude Verlinde's striking, quasi-contemporary (and rather Freudian) interpretation of Aphrodite's birth, I just had to share. The rest of his work is fabulous as well.

Heh, I only encountered his work recently as well but hadn't got round to posting anything. Great paintings, I don't think I'd seen this one.

What a fantastic dreamlike painting, so surreal and fetishistic. Not only does the large shell with it's opening look like an opening vulva it relates to the teeth of the zip of the thigh-length boot too. Aphrodite obviously wasn't put on this earth to nurture just orthodox sexual pleasures which come as a great relief to me.

Hello! Roman art is centered around naked beauty. If you don't believe me look up more art from that era.
Not only is Aphrodite the goddess of Sexuality, but she's the most beautiful of them all, and is almost ALWAYS depicted as being naked. You know google has a "mature filter" if you can't be grown up, turn that on, and quit complaining.

I definitely think there are some subtle hints in the imagery of this artwork.. Aphrodite looks amazing though and I look forward to seeing more of his work! I love this greek mythology stuff!
