Alice Maher "Lectores Mirabilis IV" 2004
Alice Maher works in several mediums, and explores ideas about nature and the body. Her vision spans the spectrum: she is a master of intricate charcoal renderings, yet also a photographer of arresting portraits which feature the subject wearing anatomical or organic elements, such as a necklace of actual animal hearts. I discovered her work while viewing an amazing exhibition in London a few years ago, entitled "Metamorphing" - truly, one of the best shows I have ever had the privilege of attending. It explored the idea of metamorphosis through science, art, mythology, and religion. It was an eclectic, multi-disciplanary exercise which straddled many fields, thereby creating a fascinating holistic survey. Maher's piece, "Ombre" was an expansive and meticulously detailed drawing of human hair. Brilliant.
